Frequently asked questions

How is hardwood sold?

Unlike lumber at big box stores, hardwood is sold in random widths by the board foot (BF). Board Foot is a volume measurement.

Example:

5/4 board x 5.25” x 96”

(1.25 x 5.25 x 96) / 144 = 4.38 BF

Is your hardwood surfaced?

The majority of wood in stock at Iverson Hardwoods is hit-and-missed milled. This means the two faces are planed to expose the grain but are not guaranteed to be perfectly flat. Hit-and-miss lumber is planed to 1/16” under nominal thickness (i.e. 4/4 = 15/16”, 6/4 = 1-7/16”). However, some of our stock is fully rough sawn.

I don’t have the tools to joint and plane my boards. Do you offer machining?

Iverson Hardwoods can mill your boards upon request. The fee for processing your boards will depend on the quantity and complexity of your request.

Where does your wood come from?

We source wood from dozens of mills across the country to find the highest quality hardwood for our customers. All of our hardwood is kiln-dried.

Can I buy partial boards?

We sell each board in its entirety. We can make a rough cut to a board upon request.

Do you take returns?

In order to control the quality of our hardwood, we do not take returns.

Are children allowed in the storefront?

Our storefront comes with inherent risks. If you choose to bring in anyone younger than 18 years old, you are liable for their safety.
